Back to Back "Chromatics": An Exhibition by Stig De Block

Chromatics_1

Supported by Carhartt WIP, Back to Back "Chromatics" is an exhibition by the Belgian-born artist Stig De Block, taking place at Carhartt WIP Store Antwerp.

The exhibition follows on from De Block’s Back to Back “From Backyard to Boulevard”, which saw the artist traveling between the USA and Belgium over a period of five years, documenting the often-misunderstood Lowriders of Los Angeles and their ‘Sunday Funday’ gatherings through a series of photographs.

The images offer intimate insights into the Lowrider community, as De Block closely captures candy-colored paint jobs, faded tattoos, and high-shine finishes – with palettes and compositions reminiscent of 20th century photorealistic paintings and Fauvist works of art.

De Block takes this technique a step further with Back to Back “Chromatics”, building on his own photographic archive through digital painting and experimentations with light, while taking inspiration from visuals by California label Thump Records, as well as the chromatic sheen of lowrider cars.

A private viewing of the exhibition will be hosted on Thursday May 30.

The exhibition will then be open to the public from Friday May 31 until Sunday June 2.

About Carhartt Work In Progress

Established in 1994 by Edwin Faeh, Carhartt Work In Progress (WIP) develops its own collections based on original Carhartt workwear. The brand combines authentic adaptations of these robust American archetypes, while engaging with the subcultures that have embraced it. This, in turn, has seen Carhartt WIP place itself in a new context and bring forth its own classics.

Carhartt WIP opened its first store in London in 1997 and today operates over 80 brick and mortar locations worldwide. It also has its own skate team and music department, while supporting an array of artists and releasing various in-house publications. Since 2010, Carhartt WIP has worked with a number of like-minded collaborators, including A.P.C., Converse, Fragment Design, Junya Watanabe, Nike, Underground Resistance, and Motown.
